STUDENTS RECEIVE INNOVATION TECHNOLOGY SEMINAR

An innovation technology seminar tagged “UJ Innovation Tech Camp” was organised by the Public Relations Officer of the Students Union Government (S.U.G) on Friday, 18th October, 2019 for students of the University of Jos community.

Welcoming the guests, the S.U.G P.R.O Joshua Ugwumba, a 400 level student of the Faculty of Agriculture said that the program is in two phases: the 1st phase being the seminar which was to enlighten students on the need to acquire technological skills to complement their certificate while the 2nd phase will be a 3 months intensive training in web creation, graphics design, 3D effect and photoshop.

Also speaking at the seminar, M. Charles encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunity that has presented itself saying “it is not just about certificate but sabificate.” He said that while it is important to obtain a certificate, students should also strive to acquire technological skills to add value to the certificate and improve themselves.

Making a presentation on “The Future of Work,” the Executive Director of nHub Foundation, Mr. Bashir Sheidu said that technology is taking over the world and only those with adequate digital skills will remain relevant in society. He further built on what Charles had earlier said about acquiring a ‘sabificate’ as he said “it is good to study well in order to graduate with good grades: aspiring to graduate with 1st class isn’t all there is to learning. You need to unlearn and relearn certain things to keep up with the evolving world.”

In an interview with Joshua Ugwumba, he said that his greatest motivation towards organising the seminar is his love for technology and his desire to see that many students are adequately equipped with knowledge in ICT. He further expressed his gratitude to his sponsors, S.U.G executives and friends for their support.

It was gathered that although adequate publicity was carried out, many students were unable to attend due to other school activities. While some students present listened intently during the seminar, others seemed to be nonchalant about it.

The seminar was characterised by fun-filled activities such as music, dance, spoken words, fastest fingers and lots more, all of which kept the students entertained.

The seminar which took place at the Multi-Purpose Auditorium (MPA), Bauchi Road Campus had in attendance representatives from UJHub, nHub, Girls Code Initiative, the S.U.G Financial Secretary and S.U.G Director of Socials.
