MICROBIOLOGY CELEBRATES NAMS WEEK

The Department of Micro Biology of the University of Jos Nigeria commenced her departmental week today the 21 st of October 2019.
The occasions began as students of the department marched round the Bauchi Road Campus of the university sensitizing and educating students and sellers in the university environment on cholera, hepatitis and personal hygiene, the causes and effects.

They were educated that micro organisms which are around us could either help or harm us, as some cause infection. The means through which these unhealthy organisms can be contacted includes: handshakes, washing of hands in stagnant water and lots more. Sharing of towels, sweats and saliva among others could be a means of contacting Hepatitis. The people were also educated that the symptoms of cholera include: loss of weight, watery diarrhea and others and they were enjoined to come to the department and get tested on Hepatitis B and C.

The president of the department in the person of Adams Paul Owusoweshi said that all those who are tested are advised to go to the Epidemiology Unit associated with the Ministry of Health at Lugard Road to be given medication for those who tested positive and vaccination for those who tested negative so as to prevent them from being infected and added that all these would be for free.

The exercise was conducted by the 400 level students of the department as he said ‘they are trained professionals and are capable’. While the 300 level students are doing their Industrial Training (IT), some of which are in the Epidemiology Unit who help to give them feedback. The 200 and 100 level are not involved in this exercise.

The Head of Department in the person of Assoc. Prof. O.J Egbere encouraged the students to keep up the good work as he said ‘the department is solely behind you’.
